 Mikey has a new bed!

Yesterday, my sister, Mikey, and I went to Target, where we got Sir Michael of the Suddenly Wide Feet a new pair of shoes. He's outgrown the size 12 shoes I got him too big three or four months ago, and we couldn't find a single pair of size 13s that he found comfortable. We did, however, find a pair of size 1s that Mikey loves the feel of, even if big kids' shoes aren't nearly as cool as the little ones. No more flashing Buzz Lightyear shoes for the Moo.

Note to self: Target does not carry boys' shoes in wide widths.

We also picked him up three pairs of size 6 jeans, which are WAY too big in the waist. Thank goodness for Wrangler's adjustable waistbands!

He picked out for himself a new winter hat. It has skulls and crossbones all around the brim. He loves it: "It's pirate-y!"

Then off to Ikea for the new bed. We wandered around Kids' Ikea for a while before finding the perfect bed! (We got it without the canopy.)

Mikey played under it for about ten minutes before we dragged him out to pick out a duvet cover and pillow sham. We also got some hanging storage for his room and an irresistible hobby horse. Then we headed downstairs and got him some cheap sheets.

We had a lot of fun.

It was too late when we got home last night to put the bed together for him, so it waited until after we got home this afternoon. I rearranged his room and opened up the box and quickly realized two things: 1.) The bed would not fit where I was planning on putting it. 2.) Mikey's room is way too small for a project that size. Also, this bed is the most complicated Ikea project I have ever seen: lots of pieces, lots of very-similar-but-not-quite-the-same pieces, and only four pieces that were labelled.

But it's done. I had to enlist Dad's help about halfway through to push on one end while I pushed on the other, because man, is the fit on some of the pieces ever tight. We didn't get it done until 10, though; so Mikey is still sleeping on his crib mattress underneath his new bed, because we decided to wait until tomorrow to do the mattress merry-go-round. (Mikey gets the mattress I have now, and I get the really nice mattress that used to be mine that currently resides in the basement. It would be easier to just give Mikey the basement mattress, but it has a pillow-top that makes it too thick to put in the KURA bed.)

But for all the time it took and all the headache, Mikey now has the coolest bed ever.

I had a very similar bed when I lived with my parents. After a while I was a bit too big for it and it was wobbly so we made a few minor adjustments and flipped it over. It became like a four poster bed and I hung blankets/sheets around it to make it private. I loved that bed, I wish I still had it. I am glad to hear you had some help, I would have never been able to put it up if it werent for my dad being there.  Well, yay for the bed situation being taken care of! I hope he has lots of fun with his new stuff.

okay. Mikey is officially growing up too darn fast!

(getting his big-boy bed is one of my son's earliest vivid memories, by the way.)

I used to love going to Ikea but I got seduced by all their furniture which I could never put together properly, so I gave up going.

That's a wonderful bed, full of make-believe possibilities for your son.
